Search Engine Optimization (SEO),
Search engine optimization can be broken down into 2 main factor
- On Page optimization
- Off Page optimization
Effectively executing against both on page and off page optimization techniques is key to the success of any SEO initiative.
On page optimization
- Title Tags: All your pages should have unique title tags this is one of the most important elements that the crawler uses to rank and differentiate your website/webpage from others. Include keywords in the title tag that you would want to rank for. Try and limit the length of the title tag to 70 characters. Examples of good title tags:
Mexican Restaurants in Los Angeles XYZ.com
Vs.
Restaurant Page
- URLs and Interlinking: The URLS to your site should be static as opposed to dynamic. This is because dynamic URLs are tougher to crawl. Here's an example:
www.mysite.com/sitename.php?retailid=1&product=shoes
This should be:
www.mysite.com/shoes
www.mysite.com/red-shoes
It's important for URLs to contain keywords statistics show that out of top 10 Google results 40-60% have keywords in the URL. More on this - Changing Dynamic URLs to Static
Interlinking is extremely important - use a sitemap with text links to not only help visitors find what they are looking for, but to direct the spiders to all of your internal pages.
- Content Content Content: Make the content of your site unique if the users like it and keep coming back so will the bots! Don't go overboard and make every other word on the page the keyword you want to rank the page for. Stuffing the page with keywords is considered a form of spam. Focus on search phrases and be descriptive new delhi auto showroom not our showroom".
Refrain from using Flash and AJAX. Spiders can read text not flash or images. Do not use text images instead of plain text you can always use CSS to pretty them up!
- Duplicate Content: This is an important issue that should be addressed and understood. If you publish unique content on your site make sure the crawlers get a chance to crawl it before you distribute it to other site. Different URLs pointing to the same content is also a problem that SEOs should be aware of. Because search engines index URLs rather than pages, it's possible for them to index the same pages presented in different ways. A canonical URL is one that is determined to be the best URL for a page, but search engines don't always recognize that the same page is being presented multiple ways. For example, the following URLs may all point to the same page:
http://www.example.com
http://www.example.com/index.htm
http://example.com
http://example.com/index.htm
Make sure you 301 redirect the the different URLs to one canonical URL. More on 301 redirects and canonical tags
Off Page Optimization
Linking, Linking, Linking: This rule is nothing new and its been there was ages the only difference is we now see it as a integral part of the Search Engine's ranking algorithm. Take the stock market for instance if a number of people buy a particular stock the stock is seen as an important stock and the value shoots up if the people sell this stock the value or importance shoots down. This is how Search Engines view your website if there are a number of high quality sites or sites that relate to your vertical linking to you your value or importance shoots up and you start to rank higher. Start by submitting your website to
trusted directories
