As the Internet matures, more and more people are discovering how much money there is to be made in the world of Internet marketing. If you're new to the game, it can be difficult to know where to start. There are as many strategies and approaches to Internet marketing as there are people. Let's take a look at some of the basics.

How are People Making Money?

Although there are countless ways to make money, most of them fall under a few broad categories.

1. Selling Advertising

This includes programs like Adsense or other pay per click advertising. You can also sell banner advertisements for a set price per month or for a certain dollar amount per 1000 impressions. This method generally requires that you have a website with regular traffic.

2. Selling Affiliate Products

There are many products online that you can promote, and you'll generally receive a commission for each sale that you make. You can sell products for Amazon.com, or you can sell other Internet marketers' digital products. You can also get paid if you can generate leads for other Internet marketers.

3. Selling Your Own Products

Another method is to create products of your own to sell. If you can identify a market and create a product that solves a problem or frustration that they have, then you can make a healthy amount of sales.

4. Coaching/Consulting

If you are an expert in a particular field, you can sell coaching sessions. You can help people achieve the results they want in some area of their lives.

How do People Market their Site or Product?

It's all well and good to have a product or service to sell, but if you don't put it in front of Internet users' eyeballs, then you won't get any sales. Here are the most common marketing methods:

1. PPC

Pay Per Click advertising is a popular method to get search-targeted visitors. The most popular place to advertise is on the Google search results page.

2. Article Marketing

This method involves writing articles for sites like ezinearticles.com. Your articles will get read by people who find them via Google, and then you can guide them to your product.

3. Email Marketing

Email marketing involves building a list of prospects and sending them a daily or weekly newsletter. You can then offer your products or services to them in your emails.

4. Search Engine Marketing

This method involves optimizing your website so that you will show up in the Google search results for particular keywords.

Hopefully you now have a broad overview of how people make money in Internet marketing. These methods just scratch the surface, and they can often be combined for even more powerful effects.

Revenue sharing programs between a merchant and a website owner are called affiliate marketing programs. Website owners will sign up with the merchant. This allows the website owner to place ads for the merchant on their website. In exchange, the merchant will pay the website owner a portion of the revenue generated. This concept is called revenue sharing; paying commission for referring business.

One of the most common types of affiliate marketing is pay per click ads. The largest company participating in pay per click is Google and their AdSense program. The code for the ad will scan the web page for keywords. The ad that is displayed will then be associated with the web content of the website. A downside to this process is web pages that have poor keyword density may show ads that are not related to the content of their website.

Pay per click is designed for organic clicking. The ads are geared towards the subject matter of the website in hopes of enticing the reader to click the link to the associated website for further information. A problem with pay per click affiliate marketing is click fraud. Click fraud is clicking on your own website links or when other individuals excessively click on your links. This is monitored by Google and can result in your account being terminated.

Pay per lead affiliate sales marketing is when a referred individual registers on the affiliate’s website, the referring website will receive a pre-determined amount of compensation.

Pay per sale affiliate marketing is when the website owner gets a percentage of the sale price of every sale generated from their website traffic. A large company for pay per sale affiliate marketing is Amazon. An individual on your website clicks on the link to an Amazon ad and purchases the item through Amazon, the website owner will get a portion of the sale.

Affiliate marketing is an excellent way to make passive income. All an individual needs is to sign up for an account and to have an existing website. Some affiliate marketing programs require that the website be established and have several pages of quality content. These affiliate programs will require an application and approval process before you can place their ads on your website.

There are benefits to the merchant in affiliate marketing as well. The advertising for their business on popular websites will increase their site’s traffic and sales. The cost associated with pay per click ads will vary based on the keyword popularity and competition. In addition, affiliate marketing merchants must content with fraudulent clicks and purchases.

Black hat SEO is used by websites to achieve a higher search ranking through the use of techniques that do not conform to search engine requirements. There are several factors that influence the way that a search engine will index a website. One way that search engines will rank your pages is based on the keyword density of your content. Another way that search engines rank your web page is by back links. Back links are other web pages linking to your web page. A back link insinuates that the linked website is one that is relevant to the visitor.

Black hat SEO is using techniques such as keyword stuffing and invisible text to achieve a higher search ranking. Keyword stuffing is adding an overabundance of keywords to your Meta tags as well as multiple variations of keywords to your content to make your website appear more relevant to search engines. This makes the content on your website difficult to read and gives the overall impression of inferior content. Another form of keyword stuffing is invisible text. Invisible text is including text into your webpage and then making it the same color as the background.

Doorway pages are built to rank well in the search engines; however, they do not possess any quality content of their own. These pages then link or auto redirects the visitor to the real website. Cloaking is another black hat SEO technique. Cloaking is showing one page to the search engine and another page to the website visitor.

Spamdexing is another form of Black hat SEO. Spamdexing techniques are a way of creating back links to your website. These techniques include using link farms, hidden links, and comment spam. Link farms are groups of websites that link back to each other. These link farms can be human generated or generated using software. Hidden links is including links into your web page where visitors will not see them. Comment spam is used to insert links into comment pages, blogs and guest books. These individuals insert non-relevant comments in order to assign a link to their web page.

Black hat SEO techniques are strictly frowned upon by search engines. Websites that are discovered to be employing these techniques may be punished by the search engines. Websites can be penalized by the search engines by having their rank reduced. The other form of punishment is being banned. This is having your website removed from the search engine rankings completely.

Search engines play a very important role in today's online business. The most of people who go online and need to look for various products or services, they search them on search engines. Google and Yahoo are leading search engines. Those search engines also send a great amount of traffic to various websites that offer the services or products searched by users.

Search engine executives have understood the marketing potential of search engines and have started to offer their Search Engine Marketing (SEM) programs. Of late Google and Yahoo have become great platforms to advertise or market your product.

There are various reasons why SEM is better that traditional online marketing. Other ways to advertise online include putting ad banners on websites and generating traffic to your website and selling your product. But it is not as much effective as SEM. People who go to search engines looking for a product are more likely to buy it as they are looking for it actively. Search engines put the advertisements of products on the right side of the search result pages as “sponsored links.” Thus people are most likely to click on those text ads and go to the website of the advertiser and buy the product being sold. This is different from the traditional banner advertising as these ads may also be shown to people who may not be actively looking for the product advertised.

Another benefit of SEM is that your pay money only when a user clicks on the text ad of your product. If the user only sees your text ad without clicking on it then you do not need to pay anything to search engines.
